Entering the library
Q. I forgot my Student ID card!
A. You still can enter the library without the Student ID card but are not allowed to borrow books. Fill in the form (Name and Student ID number are required) at the Reception to receive temporary entrance card.
Q. When I tapped the Student ID card, the gate did not open and an alarm sounded.
A. Please do not try to pass the gate, instead go ask the library staff at the Reception for help. We will check your user information.
Q. The alarm sounded when I passed the exit gate!
A. Please do not try to pass the gate, and follow the library staff’s instructions. Make sure you have checked out all library items before exit. There are also cases that the detector reacts to items from other libraries.
Q. What time does the library close today?
A. Today’s opening hour is shown at the left on the top page of the library homepage.
Please see the Library Hours for the details. We also display the 2 months calendar within the library, and distribute it at the entrance.
Any changes to library hours or closures will be posted within the library and on the library website.
Q. Can my friends or family who are not students here enter the library?
A. Yes, if they make procedures at the Reception to enter as visitors. It is prohibited to lend one’s ID card to others, to enter together with more than one people.
Q. I am a graduate. Can I use the library?
A. Yes, if you register at the Reception to enter as visitor. Your official ID is required for the registration. Please check “For Alumni" for information on registration.

Q. Can I use computers at the library?
A. Yes, you can use the library’s computers (Windows desktop PC) located at the Computer Workstation on the Main building 1st floor. Or you can also use your own devices (Laptops, Smartphones, Tablets etc. However, please refrain from using them in the 3rd floor (Quiet Zone) of the Periodicals Annex.
Q. The screen turned off when I was still using it.
A. If you leave the PC untouched for over 15 minutes, it will automatically shut down. The work in process cannot be saved in the device (it will be deleted when the PC shut down). Please save the essential files on Google drive or USB.
Q. Where can I find the power sockets in the library?
A. There are 4 places where power sockets are available. The number of sockets is limited so please share.

Q. Is there Wi-Fi in the library?
A. Yes, the university-wide wireless LAN service “1284 Wireless” is available. Select “hit-eap” or “hit-sae”, then enter your Hitotsubashi Authentication ID and Password (each user ID can access Wifi simultaneously on 2 devices only). For “hit-sae”, please ask the System Avisory Desk, or library staff at the Help Desk for the security password when logging in for the first time. Please use the Wifi for Educational and Research purposes only. Please turn off Private Mac address.
Q. I cannot log into the library’s computer.
A. You can log in with your Hitotsubashi Authentication ID and Password. To check if your ID and Password are valid, go to the Center for Information and Communication Technology website – “User Profile Maintenance”.
Self-schooling
Q. Are there any spaces for group study and discussion?
A. You can use the “Group Study Rooms” (for group of over 3 people) located on the Main building 2nd floor or the Periodicals Annex 5th floor. Reservation is required, so please make request at the Reception or from MyLibrary. Refer to the website for the reservation guidance.
In addition, you can use the Clock Tower Commons [TSR Commons] on the 1st floor of Clock Tower, with no reservation needed.
Q. Are there any tranquil spaces for me to study?
A. Yes, the 3rd floor of Periodicals Annex is the Silent Area where usage of electrical devices is forbidden. It is not the Quiet Zone, but we highly recommend the Reading Room on the Main building 2nd floor.
Q. Can I use the projector to practice presentation?
A. You can borrow it when using the Group Study Rooms. Please ask the Counter if you want to use.
Q.
Can visitors also self-study in the library?
A. Sorry, visitors’ entrance for self-study purpose is not accepted.
Printing and copying
Q. Can I have my material printed out in the library?
A. You can print out materials from the library’s devices, or from your own PC. For more details, refer to “Printing in the Library”.
Q. Can I exchange money in the library?
A. No, please prepare coins beforehand. 1000 yen bills can be used for copy machines or printers that accept cash. When the machine have run out of coins to return, please contact the Help Desk (Weekdays 9:00-17:00).
Q. Where can I use my University Copy card?
A. At the photocopy machine for specialized use on the Main building 1st floor. It can only be used for copying library’s materials, and cannot be used to Print out materials. For more details about the location of Photocopy machines and Printers, please refer to “Photocopy” on the Library website.
Q. Can I copy the materials which don’t belong to the library?
A. No, the machines should only be used for the reproduction of library’s materials only. Reproduction of materials brought from outside is prohibited.
Checkout / Returns
Q. I don’t know how to use the self-checkout machine
A. Please watch the guidance video. Ask the library staff at the Reception for help if you have any troubles.
Q. I want to know how many books I am borrowing
A. You can check it on your MyLibrary account, the library’s online service for university members. Log in with your Hitotsubashi Authentication ID and Password, and go to “MyPage” to check.
Q. I forgot to return the book before due date
A. Please return as soon as possible. Even when the Library is closed, you still can return it from the Book Return Drop on the Clock Tower. We also accept return by post if you cannot go to the library. If either way is impossible, please fill in the form below, or simply reply to the Reminder Email. The penalty is being forbidden to borrow books and the length of penalty period is according to the number of days you have delayed return.
Q. I want to extend the due date
A. Try making the extension request on MyLibrary. Go to “MyPage” > Check of Status of Lending / Reservation, select the materials you want to extend the due date and click “Extend”. You can also make the request at the Circulation Counter. However, extension is not allowed under the below circumstances.
・The material has been reserved
・The due date has passed
・You have other overdue items
Q. The library materials are lost / got wet / damaged. What should I do?
A. Please consult with Library Counter as soon as possible! You should submit a Lost/Damage Report and bring reimbursement materials (same edition books) .
Special materials
Q. How can I use the materials in the Stack Areas?
A. Undergraduate students are not permitted to enter the Stack areas, so please apply via mail form in advance or via main counter on the day. Faculty and Graduate Students are able to enter the stack areas. Reception hours of the stack areas are limited, so please check the page “Using the Stack Areas” first.
Q. Can I use the rare materials?
A. Please apply via the page “Rare Materials” in advance.
Q. I’d like to read graduation or master’s theses.
A. Graduation Theses, Master’s Theses and Credit-earning Theses for doctoral courses donated to library are shelved in the stack areas. Students and faculty of Hitotsubashi university are able to read theses. Please check the page “Searching for Graduation Theses, Master’s Theses and Doctoral Theses”.
Others
Q. Where can I borrow stationery (stapleless stapler, scissors etc.)?
A. You can use items provided in the Stationery Station on the 1st floor of the Main building. The library staff do not provide stationery.
Q. Can I borrow dictionaries?
A. In principle, dictionaries and lexicons cannot be loaned. Please use them in the library.
Q. I forgot something in the library!
A. The lost property is held by the Circulation Counter for a length of time, and then will be sent to the Student Service Division. If you cannot find it at the Counter, try contacting the Student Service Division.
Q. What to do if I encounter a nuisance?
A. Please report to the Circulation Counter and the library staff will handle it. Please also inform the Counter when you encounter with machines breakdown or suspicious items.
Q. I feel hot / cold in the library…
A. Due to Energy Saving Plan of Hitotsubashi University, the set temperature is 28 degrees in the summer, and 20 degrees in the winter in the library. If you feel too hot or too cold, please notify the counter.
Q. I want to use the book in the Chiyoda Campus library.
A. Students and faculty in Kunitachi Campus are able to apply to delivery materials from Chiyoda Campus library. They also can enter the Chiyoda Campus library and use the materials. Please see “Chiyoda Campus Library" for details.
