Requests for Loans and Photocopies from Other Libraries

If the materials you require are not in the library, they can be ordered in from external libraries.
When the materials are not available in Japan the following options are possible:
  • When making a request to another library, an advance inquiry from Hitotsubashi University Library is generally required.
  • Please thoroughly check the holdings of Hitotsubashi University Library before making requests to another library.
  • Investigating which library has the materials you require can be done via the online search systems below:

Requesting photocopies from another library(Copying of Documents - Domestic)

  • Apply by filling in the necessary information on a Document Copy Application Form at the Help Desk.
  • Applications are also possible via My Library.
  • Applicants are responsible for payment of all copy, postage and handling fees for copied documents.
  • If copies are required urgently, they can sometimes be sent via fax or other image transmission systems.

Requests for theses will need to specify the name and volume number of the carrying periodical, as well as the number of pages.

Requesting books on inter-library loan from another library(Borrowing of Originals - Domestic)

  • While individuals usually can not directly borrow materials held at other university libraries, it is possible to order in originals through the reciprocal use system.
  • Apply by filling in the necessary information on an Original Loan Application Form at the Help Desk.
  • Applications are also possible via My Library.
    • Applying is simple via HERMES-Link.
    • Just click the "ILL" button after specifying "National Universities" in the HERMES search.
  • Orders from the following university libraries are possible:
    1. National University Corporation Libraries (including Inter-University Research Institutes)
    2. Osaka City University Media Center
    3. Waseda University Central Library
    4. Keio University Mita Media Center
    5. Sophia University Library
    6. Tsuda College Library
    7. International Christian University Library
    8. Institute of Developing Economies Library

  • Materials cannot be borrowed from holdings at public or private universities other than those listed above.
  • Applicants are responsible for payment of all postage fees for both delivery and return of items and of handling fees set by the lending library.
  • Periodicals cannot be borrowed.
  • Use is subject to the terms for borrowing at the relevant external institution.
    • Some materials may not be taken off library premises (on-premise viewing only) or copied.
[Public Subsidy Service for Graduate Student Borrowing of Originals]

The application for each fiscal year will end on January 31.

  • In effect during the academic year (since April 1): up to 5 books per person free.
  • The subsidy will finish once its budget limit is reached.
  • Applications remain the same ? via My Library or at the Help Desk on the 1st floor of the library.
  • Available only for materials at National University Corporation Libraries (including Inter-University Research Institutes), Osaka City University Media Center, Waseda University Central Library, Keio University Mita Media Center, Sophia University, Library Institute of Developing Economies Library, International Christian University Library and Tsuda College Library.

Requesting photocopies from an overseas library(Copying of Documents - International)

If materials are not available domestically, copies can be requested from the three kinds of overseas organization listed below:
  • Use the relevant tools to confirm materials exist before applying, and make a note of detailed collection information (call numbers, etc.).
    • As a rule, you should first check the North American ones, then the British Library.
    • For North American libraries, confirm bibliographical information via WorldCat, then on the details screen for the specified bibliography,
    • follow the "Get this item" → "Borrow or obtain a copy" → "Enter your location:" options, and enter "USA" to confirm the library where the materials are held.
    • Check this list to see whether the relevant library is one that accepts requests GIF member library) from Hitotsubashi University.
    • ※The university names on WorldCat and the library names on the GIF member list can sometimes differ by annex, so confirm on WorldCat’s Individual Library Online Catalog.
    • After specifying a library that accepts requests, indicate the library name and call number.

    Requesting books on inter-library loan from an overseas library(Borrowing of Originals - International)

    If materials are not available domestically, they can be ordered in from the overseas organizations listed below:
  • Use the relevant tools to confirm materials exist before applying, and make a note of detailed collection information (call numbers, etc.).
  • Borrowing from libraries in Korea is unablable.
    • As a rule, you should first check the North American ones, then the British Library .
    • For North American libraries, confirm bibliographical information via WorldCat, then on the details screen for the specified bibliography,
    • follow the "Get this item" → "Borrow or obtain a copy" → "Enter your location:" options, and enter "USA" to confirm the library where the materials are held.
    • Check this list to see whether the relevant library is one that accepts requests (a GIF member library) from Hitotsubashi University.
    • ※Libraries that originals can be borrowed from need to have a "Yes" for the "Book Loan" item in the list.
    • ※The university names on WorldCat and the library names on the GIF member list can sometimes differ by annex, so confirm on WorldCat's Individual Library Online Catalog.
    • After specifying a library that accepts requests, indicate the library name and call number.

    Fees

    *As in the case of domestic loans, applicants are responsible for payment of all postage fees for both delivery and return of items.
